God With Us
The following is an excerpt from our free devotional, ADVENTUS.
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign:
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”
Isaiah 7:14
Immanuel - God with us. What a beautiful name and an even more beautiful promise. God Himself is promising to come to our rescue!
The events surrounding Jesus’ first coming were to be of the greatest level of Divine intervention. God the Father was looking to interrupt history by sending His own Son for a broken and lost world.
We see that Scripture tells us that the Lord Himself will give us first a sign - but a sign unto what? Most assuredly, it would be a sign of peace, restoration, healing, deliverance, and salvation.
Part of this sign will be a virgin divinely conceiving a child. We read later that this takes place when the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary.
Our God is the God of the impossibles. When it was physically impossible for Mary to conceive, God made a way. When all of humankind was lost without hope of redemption, God made a way.
This Divine Child, God with us, would not be born into the sin stricken lineage of Adam. Instead, He would be born as the Second Adam - God’s own begotten Son. No other person in all of history has held both a divine and a natural nature. Jesus is truly fully divine, and fully human - the only One uniquely qualified to reconcile us to God, and to permanently destroy the sting of death and the stain of sin.
This glorious announcement by the prophet Isaiah is the never-ending and never-failing hope that our faith rests upon. Just as God was “God With Us,” He still is “God With Us.” Nothing is impossible for God Almighty. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever!
