Worship Didn’t Begin with a Song—It Began in the Garden
Before there were altars and arks, before there were choirs or chords, before there was a temple or a tabernacle…
There was a garden.
There was Eden.
And in that garden, man didn’t sing to impress or sacrifice to earn favor. He simply walked with God.
This is the sacred beginning of worship: not performance, but presence.
Not striving, but communion.
Not shame, but image-bearing glory.
“Before the Tabernacle, before the Temple… there was Eden. And it was holy.”
Let’s return to the first sanctuary—where worship began.
Eden Was a Sanctuary, Not Just a Paradise
“And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day…” (Genesis 3:8)
Eden wasn’t just a beautiful garden—it was the dwelling place of God with man.
Genesis 2 gives us detailed imagery that mirrors the future design of Israel’s Tabernacle and Temple:
A garden planted eastward
Rivers flowing from it (see Revelation 22)
Precious stones like gold, onyx, and bdellium
Two trees in the center: life and knowledge
None of these are random. They are divine symbols. Eden is the first holy space, where heaven and earth overlapped.
“The garden was a sanctuary — and humanity was created not just to live in it, but to worship in it.”
The First Priests: Worship as Image-Bearing Purpose
“Let us make man in our image…” (Genesis 1:26)
“Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden… to work it and keep it.” (Genesis 2:15)
The Hebrew words abad (to work/serve) and shamar (to keep/guard) are used again in Numbers 3 to describe the duties of the Levitical priesthood.
That means Adam and Eve were more than gardeners.
They were priests, created to co-rule with God and minister to Him.
Their worship was embodied—through presence, purpose, and partnership with God. This wasn't a Sunday ritual. It was life as liturgy.
“Worship was always meant to be embodied — our very lives were created as priestly expressions of God’s glory.”
Broken Communion, Deeper Pursuit
And then… the fall.
The lie. The bite. The shame.
Fig leaves. Fear. Hiding.
But even then, God still came walking.
He still asked the question:
“Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9)
Sin did not cancel God’s desire to dwell with us.
It deepened His pursuit.
He clothed them with the first sacrifice—tunics of animal skin (Genesis 3:21).
He blocked the garden’s entrance not to punish, but to protect.
To prevent eternal separation.
To make a way for redemption.
“Christ is the Second Adam who reopens the sanctuary. In Him, the veil is torn.”
This is not the end of the story.
It’s the beginning of redemption.

The Pattern Emerges: Eden Is the Blueprint
From this first sanctuary, a pattern is born:
Presence — God dwelling with man
Access — communion without shame
Priesthood — image-bearers tending sacred space
Veil/Exile — separation, guarded by cherubim
These elements echo through every act of worship in Scripture:
The Tabernacle in the wilderness
The Temple in Jerusalem
The veil torn at Christ’s crucifixion
The Holy Spirit making His home in us
“God has always wanted to walk with us. Every altar, tent, and temple is trying to get us back to Eden.”
Jesus: The Way Back to the Garden
“The first man, Adam, became a living being; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.” (1 Corinthians 15:45)
Jesus is not just our Savior.
He is our Eden.
He is the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8), the torn veil, the second Adam, the new and living way back into the presence of God.
And Revelation shows us the end of the story is the restoration of Eden:
“Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men… and He will dwell with them.” (Revelation 21:3)
“A river of life… the tree of life… and His servants shall serve Him.” (Revelation 22)
From walking in Genesis to dwelling in Revelation, the story is one of presence restored.
Where Are You Hiding?
God is still asking the question today.
“Where are you?”
Not because He doesn’t know.
But because He wants you to come out of hiding.
Where have you been covering yourself in fig leaves of performance, shame, or distraction?
Where have you avoided His presence because of fear?
He’s walking in the cool of your day again.
Calling your name.
Offering His own flesh and blood as covering.
Inviting you back.
“God, bring me back to the place where I walk with You.
Not in shame, but in love.
Jesus, You are my Eden.”
